After spending an equal number of years in two starkly different continents, 21 years in Africa where I was born and raised and 21 years in North America, it became painfully evident to me how disadvantaged most children in my continent of origin are. Not disadvantaged because of a lack of innate talents and abilities, but because of the environment in which they are raised. I know firsthand just how brilliant, hard working, and resilient kids in my part of the world are. Yet in much of Africa, rising youth unemployment rates, a dormant private sector, and increasing brain drain out of the continent prevent children from igniting and exploring their brilliant minds.
We at Vijona Africa are on a quest to arm 7-17 year olds with the tools they need to become the next generation of innovators, pioneers, and entrepreneurs across Africa. Our mission is to give African youth the gift of self-discovery by helping them identify their unique talents, exposing them to career paths, and inspiring a “take-charge, can do” mindset. Vijona celebrates brilliant young Africans across all industries--no dream is too small or too big. We are expanding the next generation’s sense of self-determination and empowering them to discover, develop, and deploy their untapped potential.
It takes a village to raise a child!
